The Best 11 Methods To Access Your Subconscious

Ever wonder what you can discover deep inside your mind?

Check In With Your Subconscious To Make Sure You Don't Store Unhealthy Programming

95% of your actions, thoughts and feelings happen without your conscious control. Time to check what's going on in your unconscious if you procrastinate, self-sabotage, or think negatively.

The subconscious is the part of the mind that's hidden in the depth, like a giant iceberg. Let's discover it. If you want to stop pin-balling through life it's crucial that you become aware of what's going on below the surface.

You have a better shot to control your subconscious if you understand what is going on. This way, you stop being triggered and stop reacting irrationally. You start making conscious and subconscious decisions that are aligned with your goals and values. Making conscious choices (instead of being reactive) will bring more clarity and direction to your life.

Here's a collection of 11 of the most popular and effective techniques you can use to access your subconscious mind. Choose the practices from the list below that inspire you most. You can mix them up and combine them of course for a stacked effect! Time to tap into the powers of your conscious and subconscious minds.

How To Access Subconscious Mind

1 – AFFIRMATION (REPETITION IS KEY)

Your mind is constantly telling you stories. Let's make them count, shall we?

Positive affirmations and mantras can replace negative beliefs and thoughts. Repeat the affirmations with emotion to embed them into your subconscious. Writing these affirmations is an art form. Stay close to learn how to master this!

Affirmations remind you that ‘You Got This’. They reassure you that you're on the right path. And they make you feel great about (and focus you on) what you're achieving.

Remember your positive role models when repeating your affirmations. It will seal the deal for your subconscious. You tell yourself good things and you have collected proof that good things are possible! Read more about the positive role model technique here.

Keep repeating your affirmations throughout the day to reprogram your subconscious mind, especially when you’re

  • falling asleep and waking up,

  • meditating,

  • catching yourself ruminating,

  • feeling agitated or uncomfortable,

  • feeling out of whack emotionally,

  • want a burst of energy.

2 – VISUALISATION

Visualise your desired outcome as if it has already happened. See it, feel it. Experience your manifestation.

Your visualisations are more powerful if you switch on your senses and engage emotions. Science has it that the brain remembers more deeply if you feel an emotion while creating a memory.

Why Is Visualisation So Effective?

The subconscious can't distinguish between an actual experience and the emotions an imagination can bring up. Whether it is in reality or in your mind, your subconscious takes the scene for real. Your visualisation can have an even deeper impact if it is done during hypnosis as you are in a very receptive and relaxed state.

Ideal Life Visualisation

  1. Close your eyes and visualise your ideal life as it is once you've achieved your big goal.

  2. Ramp up the emotions too, feel the positive emotions.

  3. Hold this for about 15 seconds.

  4. Go, do it before you read on. It gets easier with practice!

This exercise just changed your brain into a positive state: using your imagination, knowledge and experience, it activated rewarding networks of neurons. You’ve visualised an outcome. Putting this visual together and holding it creates an intention in your mind.

Revisit it often. Your subconscious will start pulling into that direction, because it will see this as true for you.

What if you tried visualising the dream goal you're working towards but you felt nothing but shame and fear, like an inner voice telling you: 'don't be daft, you're never gonna make it. Who do you think you are'. You want to eliminate negative thoughts and get in control of your inner critic. Read this to get into a more positive and kind frame of mind.

3 – HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnosis is a shortcut in accessing your subconscious mind. How well hypnotherapy works depends on your attitude, expectations, and motivation. It brings about a mental state of focused attention and relaxation.

This receptive and relaxed state opens up your subconscious so that you can modify and improve thoughts, behaviours, and beliefs. It can teach you how to master your thoughts, emotions, and feelings.

Hypnosis is a simple process and you're always in control. People often ask me whether you can get stuck in hypnosis and this has never happened because a qualified hypnotherapist will screen you to see if it is a suitable technique for you.

It is a powerful form of therapy, so make sure you’re working with a trained and certified hypnotherapist. If you’d like to see how hypnosis can work for you and if it can help you reach your goals, click here

4 – MEDITATION

Meditating regularly can help you connect with your subconscious on a deep level – and calm your nervous system!

Observing thoughts and emotions without judgement can reveal subconscious patterns and beliefs when the conscious mind is quietened.

There's many ways to meditate and progress is definitely what we're aiming for here – not perfection. The main thing is to commit to spending time in stillness for a few minutes every day.

The more you meditate, the faster you'll be able to access your subconscious. You can get started by simply sitting still for a minute and clear your mind.

5 – DREAM DIARY & LUCID DREAMING

Dreams can give you a glimpse into your subconscious mind. Uncover underlying thoughts and feelings by keeping a dream journal. Make sure you have it on your bedside table and don't forget to have a pen handy!

Dreams fade quickly if you wake with a jolt but dream journaling can work great if you have the opportunity to wake up in leisure. The more you pay attention to your dreams, the more they'll come to you. Observe patterns to see if there are any recurring symbols, archetypes, themes, and emotions.

With dedication you can learn lucid dreaming and use the powers of your subconsciousness to guide you towards your goals.

6 – RHYTHMIC BEATS (NOT BINAURAL BEATS!)

Beats can affect your brain and if you want to experience this then I highly recommend brain.fm. It lets you stream rhythmic audio to help you focus, sleep, and meditate. But it’s not binaural beats. It can be described as science-backed, functional music that’s made for your brain. Listen to it and feel how your brain gets activated.

7 – FREE ASSOCIATION

Let rip and spontaneously express thoughts, feelings, and memories (you can do this speaking, writing, even scribbling; whatever suits your style).

The speed helps you bypass censorship and judgement and will allow you to tap into their subconscious and reveal hidden associations and insights.

Free association allows thoughts and ideas to flow freely and often rapidly without censorship or judgement.

8 – CREATIVE EXPRESSION

Taking free association a step further you could draw, paint, write, sing, play music, move, dance, walk.

You can tap into your subconscious mind with these activities, especially if you manage to lose yourself in them. Losing yourself in an activity has been researched by modern psychology for five decades and author Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls it FLOW. Flow reduces activity in the prefrontal cortex, an area responsible for our conscious and explicit state of mind.

Flow can distort time, make you lose self-consciousness, and silences the inner critic.

Flow activities can let you express emotions, desires, and thoughts that may not be readily accessible through logical thinking.

Get into Flow

  1. Draw something you see around you – using your non-dominant hand.

  2. Use a big sheet and draw very loosely.

  3. Switch off any inner running commentary, this is supposed to be a scribble.

  4. You’ll soon experience your brain shifting gears into a more meditative state.

  5. Stay in this activity for at least 5 minutes.

  6. Repeat and practice often

  7. Or if you hated this, go for the easiest possible way to get into flow: scribble. Just make a mess on the page for a few minutes and the monotonous movement will produce a state of automatic flow in you.

  8. You don’t need to choose drawing as an activity. Any monotonous type of movement works, even cleaning, chopping, gardening, etc.

9 – AWARENESS OF PHYSICAL SENSATIONS

Subconscious patterns and motivations can materialise and express through the body.

Sometimes people call this these gut feeling or instincts. Pay attention to them as it’s your subconscious sending a message. As with dreams, the more you listen to this, the more notices you’ll get.

  1. Tune into what your body is trying to tell you.

  2. Be mindful.

  3. Keep an eye out for any physical sensations, emotions and intuitive responses.

  4. This is a big one and most people I’ve worked with aren’t aware of their physical sensations.

  5. Ask yourself these types of questions:

  6. How do you feel when you sign up a client?

  7. Where do you feel the sensation?

  8. Do you have a physical sensation when you are about to procrastinate?

  9. Has a thought set off your inner critic?

  10. Where in the body do you feel this?

10 – EMBODIMENT

Got a new belief you want to live by? Embody it!

Your subconscious is habit-based, so take inspired action and create a habit. A lot of our day is based on habits: getting up, brushing teeth, getting dressed, coffee, breakfast, work. We don’t think about any of these steps. Habits all taken together are part of your identity. You can shape your identity by what you do.

‘Pay less attention to what [they] say. Just watch what they do.’  — Dale Carnegie

Embodiment motivates you to step into the rich version of yourself quickly. It lets you take the necessary steps that will bring you closer to your goal.

Remember, manifestation is not just about positive thinking. It’s about intention, belief, and taking inspired action towards your goals. Pay attention to any intuitive guidance or opportunities that come your way and take action when it feels right.

11 – MOVEMENT

Move your body. There's something tribal about moving, especially if it is to music. Tap into that force. Or feel how you get into a trance when you walk, jog or any other repetitive motion.

The repetitive nature of movement can create a meditative effect, allowing your mind to drift while your body continues to engage in the rhythmic activity. As you immerse yourself in this experience, you may notice how your thoughts begin to quiet, and your awareness sharpens, creating a profound sense of clarity and connection to the world around you.

LET'S GET INTO ACTION

Grab a notebook, and spend a couple of minutes listing which methods you’re going to use to get closer to your subconscious? Then list out what you need and schedule it into your diary. That's it! Simply start with one. And stick with it for for long term results.

Never forget how brilliant you are. It’s amazing what you can do. You're a wise person. There’s so much more to you than your ego and conscious mind. Your wisdom and insight will make you a force, so dig into them.

Have fun with this process and until next week!

xoxo Gwen
