How To Get Unstuck?
OVERCOME SELF-DOUBT AND GET INTO INSPIRED ACTION
At some point many of us come to a void we can’t seem to bridge. We get stuck on our next step. Stalling. Keep reading to learn a universal secret about self-belief and how to get out of a stuck state back into action.
Believe in yourself you are stronger than you think. This mindset will prevent BELIEF and DOUBT from clashing in your mind.
Self belief and confidence want to usher you forward in anticipation of good things to come. But anxiety and doubt can compel you to stay still or even retreat.
This happens because our ego hates going into the unknown direction towards a possible dead end, potential failure and even defeat. We get into a funk and if that low energy mood carries on for too long we run the danger of complete standstill.
As a result, it can become difficult for some people to take action on something close to their heart. Many people who have so much to share for example don't show up in the way they could. This will stopp their impact.
Doubt fuels persistent inaction and procrastination.
So How Can Believe You Are Stronger Than You Think
What's the missing piece? Yes, you guessed it, it’s not a 7-step blueprint – it’s confidence. Confidence bridges the gap between what you want and what you get. Self belief cancels out doubt and allows you to give it a shot.
Having confidence will help you to take more action.
Steps To Boost Confidence
LET’S DEFINE SELF BELIEF
Self-belief is simply feeling confident in your abilities, qualities, and judgement. Having confidence that you can achieve goals and get through tough times.
How To Build Self Belief
Self confidence and belief is a broad concept that can be daunting, so let’s strip it back to its components and break it down. This makes it easier to digest and easier to channel. Let’s zoom in from ‘feeling confidence in life’ (huh?) to feeling confident that we can handle a specific task. Way easier to do, isn’t it?
It’s what A. Bandura of Stanford University calls self-efficacy. Bandura defines self-efficacy as the belief that you can successfully DO a particular thing. Self-efficacy is the belief that you can do the job. That you’re up for fulfilling the specific task at hand. It's the belief that you can succeed at the thing.
A BIG SITUATION IS CHOPPED UP INTO SMALL ACTIONS
And it all boils down to the question: 'Do I have the confidence to take this specific action'?
This link to ACTION makes cultivating confidence ridiculously easy.
Do the thing > succeed (or learn) > gain confidence.
Now onto the next bigger thing > gain even more confidence.
As you go through this cycle, you'll get more confident in your abilities.
What follows is the realisation: why not stop yourself from spinning out next time you face a sweat-inducing situation? Gently slow down and steer your mind away from raving and ranting about success and defeat. Relax and be kind to yourself and look after your mental health.
Chop a venture up into small steps and focus on the next small step in your sequence. You know that you are indeed able to do this action step, don’t you?
BREAK IT DOWN INTO STEPS
For example, say you’re about to give a presentation to a massive audience. Stop thinking about how career-defining it might be.
Instead, let the big picture and implications go. Break your presentation down into single steps:
Walk up to the stage (it might take a little oomph but you can do this). Launching yourself onto the podium (can do this). Smiling at the audience (can do this). Taking a deep breath (easy). Delivering the opener (ok...yay). And so on.
Even though the first step in the sequence can be the hardest, each of these on their own are do-able, right? Do this every day and you'll soon be able to translate the anxiety of your nerves into positive excitement.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU LACK CONFIDENCE?
We’ve seen how simple it can be to cultivate confidence, so why do so many people struggle? It’s the limiting beliefs and fear-based thoughts that can make us insecure. These thoughts can be countered with affirmations for self confidence and self belief. Read here how you can write effective customised self belief affirnations.
Rewiring The Brain For Confidence
BREAKING FEAR-BASED THOUGHTS: THE STATE SHIFT THAT WILL BRING YOU CONFIDENCE
I teach my students how relaxation and anxiety can’t inhabit the same body at the same time.
As long as you manage to stay in relaxation, anxiety does not rear its head. So it makes sense to use relaxation techniques for self-belief.
Here's a quick one: Brethe in to the count of 4 and breathe out to the count of 8. This alone will calm your nervous system and help you relax.
Confidence And Brain Science
Confidence lights up reward networks while fear and doubt increase activity in different brain regions. (California Institute of Technology, 2014). In general, they're mutually exclusive, so one usually inhibits the other.
The brain can't be confident and anxious at the same time from a neurological perspective. So let’s work on holding that confidence for longer. As long as you hold the relaxation, anxiety won’t be able to pop through.
Emotions can indeed swivel at the drop of a hat, but you can be the one in charge here. You can choose to let go of the thought trigger and return to the confidence state. Check this out to see how you can dissolve and let go of thought triggers.
We all know what fear based thoughts and limiting beliefs can do to our plans. When you're afraid of failure, you're on the brakes, while when you're confident, you're pushing forward.
The more action you take, the more often you’ll see success. It’s a numbers game really!
