Kelly could easily be the heir to a centuries old tea dynasty, trading with the Far East to provide us mere mortals with a ceremony that infuses calm and a sense of orderly lightness into every day, and by showing us how to embrace a Japanese way of life. She says that her own matcha journey started in Japan in 2008. But it didn’t become part of her morning routine until much later when, as a new mum juggling family and work, she struggled to get through the day without a healthy boost.

For those of you who haven’t discovered matcha yet: it’s a powdered green tea that contains more antioxidants than berries, leafy greens and nuts and gives you a longer energy boost than coffee.

Kelly set up MYcha with the aim of making authentic, organic Japanese matcha accessible to everyone (she’s bought a lot of bad matcha in the past!).

Her passion for the cultural history that surrounds matcha, and the cultivation and work that goes into creating a quality matcha, is nothing short of contagious.

What’s the one thing that you excel at, that you do better than anyone else?

I’m very determined and know I can achieve, so I don’t let little setbacks put me down. When something doesn’t go quite right for MYcha, I remind myself I’m here to help others appreciate the experience of matcha tea. This gets me back on track, sharing the best of what I know.

List the three most important principles you live by

Start each day right.

Mornings are so important because they set the tone for the entire day. I like to rise early and have a simple morning ritual, which includes giving myself enough time to do things like make the beds. It helps me to feel in control of the day.

Be kind.

This is a simple one, treat others just as you want to be treated. I say it to my children all the time.

Never, ever run out of matcha.

It’s never happened to me yet, but there would be darkness and chaos without my morning matcha (slight exaggeration perhaps). I do love the mental calm and clarity it brings and the extra energy helps me power very busy days.

Do you keep hearing the same compliment? What is it?

My enthusiasm for life and living it to the fullest is infectious.

Why do people seek you out?

By nature, I’m a very positive person and people like to be around that. I’m happy in myself, and in my life, I’ve got a great partner, beautiful children and a business that I love.

List three words that describe you, how do people introduce you?

I found this really tough to answer, so I asked my running buddy. She said “vibrant, uplifting and change-agent”.

What’s the secret sauce you add to your working life?

Creativity, lots of passion and a splash of matcha.

What makes your heart beat faster? What gives you energy?

Receiving great feedback from a customer, especially if it’s tagged to a photo of MYcha in their home. The idea of helping someone through their day with my matcha goodness really spurs me on.
